5 Benefits of Mental Health Counseling

Counseling benefits people of all ages and stages of life. It involves a patient consulting a certified mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, to ensure optimal mental, emotional, and behavioral health. It should be stated that an individual does not need to be diagnosed with a specific condition or be going through a traumatic event to seek professional counseling. Let us look at five key benefits of seeking a psychiatrist's care.

Understanding the role of a psychiatrist

Before we review the benefits of mental health counseling, it is important to distinguish between a psychiatrist and other mental health professionals. A psychiatrist is considered a medical doctor or MD. They undergo years of rigorous training in a hospital setting after receiving a four-year college degree in addition to completing medical school. Therefore, they can provide counseling services and a medical perspective of what may be going on in the patient's brain and body.

A psychiatrist's main aim is to identify, treat, and manage disorders or conditions that cause issues in an individual's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Therefore, whether an individual is living with a disorder or needs help navigating life, a psychiatrist can provide the tools and sound advice they need.

Key Benefits of Receiving Mental Health Counseling

1. Counseling can help dismantle anxiety and stress

It is no secret that life is stressful. Individuals view and handle stress differently. As one grows and experiences the world, they do not always have access to the tools necessary to cope with events or situations they deem stressful. In turn, they can develop anxiety. Anxiety is a normal emotion, but it becomes an issue if it occurs frequently or if the individual cannot regulate their emotions on their own merits at the moment. Left unaddressed, prolonged bouts of anxiety can lead to panic attacks or reliance on other harmful substances such as drugs and alcohol.

Counseling provides a safe outlet for an individual to express themselves and challenge their thoughts and triggers surrounding their source of stress and anxiety. The psychiatrist can help dismantle the negative thoughts and emotions that surround anxiety and replace them with better ones, in turn changing the way the individual copes.

2. Counseling can help maneuver life decisions or changes

Whether it is the death of a loved one, job loss, a significant increase or decrease in finances, or welcoming a new family member, experiencing a change that impacts an individual's day-to-day life will come with mental changes as well. Sometimes, an individual simply needs a sound person to bounce their thoughts and feelings off of and ensure they are making healthy decisions.

3. Counseling can help patients understand their behaviors and emotions

When there is a drastic change in behaviors or emotions, counseling can help determine the root cause. This takes place in a safe, confidential space, encouraging individuals to be open and honest during their counseling sessions. Doing so will allow the psychiatrist to determine if the behaviors and emotions are a result of trauma, lack of knowledge, or a medical condition that needs further investigation and tools. For example, suppose a patient has random, uncontrollable emotional outbursts that cause them to harm themselves or others. In that case, there is typically a deeper reason that requires medical testing, additional treatment, and counseling.

4. Counseling can identify mental health conditions or disorders

Conditions such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention hyper/deficit disorder (ADHD), major depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and others can go undiagnosed for years, often allowing the condition to worsen. Unfortunately, it is also common for individuals to take it upon themselves to self-diagnose, often resulting in misdiagnoses and self-medicating. Both can not only worsen the original condition or disorder but cause additional disorders or conditions to co-occur. This can leave them in a worse state than they began with.

During counseling, the psychiatrist will cover all bases with the patient before providing a formal diagnosis. This means they will order medical testing, perform psychological examinations, and review medical and family history.

5. Counseling can improve interpersonal relationships

Relationships are difficult enough on their own. With everyone coming from different backgrounds and having varying viewpoints of people and situations, it can be difficult to know how to navigate them. Counseling equips individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their interpersonal relationships and interactions successfully.

Sessions are personal. Therefore, the psychiatrist will encourage individuals to share personal relationships, such as those with their child, spouse, parent, coworkers, and the like. That way, they can give advice based on the specific needs of the individual and the relationship.
