Psychotherapy is a type of mental health treatment that may help to improve your life if you have been dealing with emotional issues or challenging life circumstances.

You may want to seek help through therapy if you have been experiencing troubling emotions or if your reactions to things seem out of balance with how you would normally react. It is especially important to seek therapy if your emotions impact your daily life.

8 Reasons to consider psychotherapy

Some of the emotional issues that may indicate one could benefit from psychotherapy, and which are commonly worked on in therapy sessions, include:

1. Overwhelm

Being overwhelmed and experiencing high amounts of stress can cause serious physical health issues, so it is important to try to resolve these issues in therapy.

2. Fatigue

This physical symptom can be caused by or related to mental health issues like depression. If you are dealing with fatigue, you may sleep more than usual or struggle to get up in the morning.

3. Disproportionate anger or resentment

These negative emotions are not necessarily unusual or unhealthy on their own, but they may get out of hand. You should seek support to deal with these emotions if you find that these negative feelings last longer than they usually do for you, if your level of emotion is inappropriate or disproportionate to the situation, or if you are reacting in violent or harmful ways (toward yourself or others).

4. Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is the fear of becoming trapped in certain places or going to crowded places that may trigger a panic attack. This phobia can be so severe that it makes it difficult or even impossible for someone to leave their home.

5. Anxious or intrusive thoughts

If you spend a significant amount of time each day worrying about something, or you begin to experience physical symptoms due to your worry, psychotherapy may help you address it and learn to cope.

6. Apathy

Apathy can cause you to lose interest in activities you usually enjoy or even make you feel like you don’t care about the world around you or life in general. Feeling apathetic can be a sign of depression or anxiety.

7. Hopelessness

It may indicate depression or another mental health condition if you continually feel like you have no future, hope, or motivation. Persistent feelings of hopelessness should be taken seriously as they may lead to thoughts or acts of suicide.

8. Social withdrawal

Many people feel the need to spend time alone at least every so often, and introverted people may need extra alone time. However, if being around other people consistently stresses you out or scares you, therapy may help you understand why you feel that way and learn how to deal with it.
