As a parent, it can be difficult to watch your teen struggle with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD can significantly impact their academic performance, social interactions, and overall health and well-being. However, with the right treatment plan, your teen can learn to effectively manage their symptoms and thrive in school and everyday life.

ADHD treatment options for teens

Medication

One of the primary treatment methods for teens with ADHD is medication. Psychiatrists often prescribe stimulant medications, such as methylphenidate and amphetamines, to manage ADHD symptoms. These medications increase certain brain chemicals to improve focus, attention, and impulse control.

Non-stimulant medications, such as atomoxetine and guanfacine, may also be prescribed if the teen is not a suitable candidate for stimulant medication or reacts poorly to them. Non-stimulants calm the brain by targeting other neurotransmitters.

As with other prescription medications, ADHD medication has some potential side effects. These side effects are typically temporary and resolve on their own. Nevertheless, it is important to discuss medication's potential benefits and side effects with the psychiatrist to make an informed decision about your teenager's treatment.

Behavioral therapy

In addition to medication, behavioral therapy is an essential part of ADHD treatment. Behavioral therapy empowers teenagers to develop practical strategies for managing symptoms, enhance organizational skills, and improve overall functioning. Psychiatric professionals can guide various therapy techniques, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT can help your teen gain self-awareness of their behavior and cope with ADHD-related challenges. This self-awareness can also help them better regulate their emotions.

School support

Teens with ADHD often face academic challenges due to difficulties with focus, organization, and time management. Working closely with your teen's school and teachers can help implement necessary academic accommodations. These accommodations may include:

  • Extended time for assignments or exams
  • Assigned seating near the educator or out of high-traffic areas of the classroom
  • Instructions are spoken out loud and in writing
  • Flexible seating, like wiggle chairs, standing desks, or resistance bands on chair legs
  • Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable segments

Collaborating with the educator and the school can create an environment that supports your teenager's academic success while accommodating their unique needs.

Establishing routine and structure

Creating a structured and organized environment at home can significantly benefit teenagers with ADHD. Establish consistent routines for homework, chores, and bedtime. Encourage the teen to use planners or digital calendars and reminders to manage their schedule and deadlines. Minimizing distractions, such as loud music or excessive screen time, can also help improve their focus and attention. A structured routine can provide a sense of stability for your teenager and assist them in managing their daily responsibilities.
