Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mood disorder that makes it harder to function and live each day happily. The good news is that effective treatments can help with the symptoms. This review takes a look at the symptoms of major depressive disorder.
What are the symptoms of major depressive disorder?
A psychiatrist can assess your symptoms, order lab tests, and conduct other diagnostic tests to determine if you have major depressive disorder. Although symptoms vary for each patient, the most common symptoms of major depressive disorder include constantly feeling sad, losing interest, anxiety, trouble concentrating, reduced appetite, lack of energy, sleep complications, and irritability.
Constantly feeling sad
Perhaps the most common symptom of major depressive disorder is sadness. This sadness may sometimes stem from one's circumstances and situation. However, in many cases, feelings of sadness occur for seemingly no reason at all. This is likely attributed to a chemical unbalance in the brain. Many with MDD also feel hopeless as well as sad.
Loss of interest
A lack of interest in daily activities is also common among individuals with MDD. Lack of interest can lead to functional concerns in all areas of life, including one's job, relationships, and ability to care for oneself.
Anxiety
Anxiety is commonly associated with major depressive disorder as well. However, it could also be the sign of an anxiety disorder rather than a mood disorder such as MDD. Therefore, it is highly recommended to visit a psychiatrist for a full analysis of all symptoms, medical history, etc.
Trouble concentrating
Many with depression report having difficulties concentrating on daily tasks (i.e., school or work assignments). This can make them less available and focused on their loved ones as well, which can affect their relationships with family members and friends.
Reduced appetite
Dietary changes are common among patients with major depressive disorder. Many have a reduced appetite. However, others may overeat as well. Any changes in diet that are unexplained could be a sign of depression.
Lack of energy
Depression makes it harder to feel energetic throughout the day. This often leads to the individual doing as little as they can throughout the day. Many individuals lay in bed for long hours of the day and do not exercise, which can make the condition worse overall.
Sleep complications
Sleep complications such as insomnia are also common. These sleep complications may include difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night. This often makes symptoms worse during the day.
Anger and irritability
These are symptoms commonly associated with bipolar disorder (another type of depression), but they could also apply to major depressive disorder.
