Therapy and Medication Combination for Mental Health Treatment

Psychotherapy and medication can be combined for mental health treatment, and this combination is often more effective than medication or therapy on its own. Mental health treatment often involves a combination of medication and therapy, and this combination is often the most effective form of treatment.

Although many people think that psychotherapy and psychiatry are the same, they are two different forms of treatment for mental health issues, and each has its own highly specific purposes. Therapy allows you to resolve your behaviors, feelings, issues, and responses concerning a mental health disorder. Psychiatry aims to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental disorders. Using both therapy and psychiatry together, many times alongside prescription medication, is sometimes called combination therapy.

What is the difference between therapy and psychiatry?

If you choose to participate in individual therapy, you will sit and talk with your therapist about any specific issues you are dealing with. Through these conversations, your therapist will learn about the patterns and behaviors you have that are connected with your mental health disorder. Once you both know these unhealthy patterns and behaviors, your therapist will begin teaching you healthy coping mechanisms and skills to help you adopt healthier behaviors and respond to triggers.

In group therapy, you will be in a group of your peers who also have mental health disorders, and the group will be led by one or two therapists who serve as the group moderators. You and the other group members can share stories and experiences. The moderator may also split the group into several smaller groups so that you can roleplay different scenarios.

In psychiatry, a psychiatrist – a doctor who specializes in mental health disorders – will evaluate you so that they can find out what mental health disorder you have. Once you have a diagnosis, you and your doctor can discuss your treatment options. Treatment usually involves both medication and therapy. Medication can be helpful because it helps balance out your mood and reduce the frequency and severity of the symptoms of your disorder. Other than prescribing medications for treatment, psychiatrists often add therapy to your treatment plan so you can talk about whether or not the medications are working for you and ensure that your treatment is well-rounded.

How can medication and therapy work together?

Medications can only do so much, so therapy is often added to psychiatry to give you skills that can help you maximize the effects of your medication. Therapy helps you address the problems associated with your disorder and teaches you healthy coping mechanisms that will help you combat your symptoms. Combination therapy will give you your best chance at effectively treating your disorder. Your psychiatrist and your therapist may work together or separately.
